Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): Thailand's New Digital Nomad Visa

Thailand has become one of the most popular destinations for digital nomads and remote workers. However, until recently, it was technically unlawful to do so without a work permit. That was until the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) was announced in May, and it has been available since July 15, 2024.

This visa is the perfect way to stay legally while working remotely. It offers flexibility for freelancers, remote employees, and business owners looking to enjoy Thailand’s lifestyle without worrying about visa complications. It is important to note, however, that you are not able to work for a Thai company OR Thai clients with this visa. For that, you will need a business visa. It also does NOT count towards obtaining permanent residency.

There is also an option to apply for the DTV for "Thai Soft Power Activities," which are essentially the same as the education and medical visas; however, they have a financial requirement.

Currently, the visa can only be applied for outside of Thailand, either online or at an embassy, with extensions handled within Thailand. I can help you both apply for and extend your DTV.

What is the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)?

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a long-stay visa that is, in its essence, a long-term tourist visa, specifically designed for remote workers, freelancers, and digital nomads. It allows you to legally stay in Thailand while continuing your work online for a company or clients based abroad, OR to partake in "Thai Soft Power Activities" long term.

Key Features of the DTV Visa:
  • Stay for up to 180 days with an option to renew for another 180 days at the end, for up to 5 years total.

  • Enjoy the flexibility to work remotely while experiencing Thailand’s lifestyle.

  • Requires proof of remote employment or self-employment/acceptance letters from educational/medical establishments for the "soft power" option.

  • Allows dependents.

  • Does NOT require a re-entry permit.

Who Qualifies for the DTV?

To qualify the following must apply:

  • Employment or Business: You work for a company registered abroad or run a business outside Thailand
    OR
Have a letter from an organization indicating you will undertake a "soft power" activity. The list includes Muay Thai, Thai cooking, sports training, medical treatment (including cosmetic), and seminars/conferences. (This is not an exhaustive list, however.)

  • Over 20 years old

  • A good visa history with no overstays

  • 500,000 THB in any currency—this MUST be a fiat currency and instantly accessible. It cannot be in investments/cryptocurrency/stocks, etc. (This can change slightly depending on the embassy you are applying with.)

    OR

    A sponsorship letter.

  • Dependents must be the spouse of the holder or a dependent child.

What You’ll Need to Apply

To apply for a DTV, you’ll generally need:

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining.

  • Proof of remote employment or freelance contracts with clients outside Thailand.

  • Evidence of sufficient income or savings to support your stay (specific financial thresholds apply).

  • Proof of your current location.

  • Additional documentation depending on the specific requirements of the visa program (for example, any Soft Power applications).

  • For dependents, a marriage or birth certificate, etc.
