Let me guide you through what you need to know and how to succeed in obtaining your license.
Types of Licenses Available
The Application Process
I'll guide you through each step:
Initial Preparation
We begin by gathering essential documents:
Valid passport with proper visa
Work permit or long-term visa
Certificate of residency from immigration
Medical certificate (issued within 30 days)
Current foreign license (if applicable)
Clear copies of all documents
DLT Testing Requirements
The process includes:
Physical health checks (color blindness, reaction time, depth perception)
Written examination on traffic rules
Practical driving tests
Safety video sessions
Traffic law lectures
The DLT theory exam testing and the safety videos are in available in English or Thai, no other languages are available.
The Practical is done in Thai, however doesn't really require any knowledge of the language to be completed successfully.
Generally, it takes two days to complete in total, the physical health tests, safety videos and theory test are done in one day. You are allowed two attempts to pass the theory test before you have to return another day to attempt it again, with two attempts allowed per day until you pass. The safety videos only have to be viewed once.
Once the theory test is complete, you can then return to do the practical test, generally the next day.
Once that is completed you are then provided with your license on the same day.
Thai licenses are also digitized in the DLT Licence App (Google) DLT QR Licence App (Apple)
The Department of Land Transport (DLT) offers several license categories:
Temporary License (2 years) - Your first Thai license
Full License (5 years) - Available after holding a temporary license

The Thai Licensing System
Thailand operates a progressive licensing system where new drivers typically start with a temporary license before qualifying for a full license. For foreigners, the process considers both your home country license status and your visa situation. Understanding this system is your first step toward legal driving in Thailand.
